Timna

Tapas. Who doesn't love a good tapas restaurant? Well I sure do. Going into the small space of Timna located in the humming East Village, we were ushered to a small table for two after a small wait at the bar. After ordering wine, we set to discover what looked appealing on the menu. So many lovely looking pairings. Usually, I'm of the opinion that ordering bread is a waste of time at a tapas bar, although my date never agrees, and we ordered the bread that came in a pot (not pictured) as recommended by the waiter. I apologize for being so terribly wrong, because that bread was worth it. Piping hot it came from the kitchen with a few spreads.

After we ordered the white asparagus. Served on a beet type paste with panco crumbs and goat cheese, I expected so much more. I would aquaint it to the iceburg lettuce salad you eat because it was given to you as an appetizer. It was not vibrant, the flavor of the asparagus was too bland. The flavors I thought would liven it up only served to make a marginal attempt to make it less so.

With the asparagus finally finished, we were read for anything else. When the mediterranean sashimi plate (pictured above) arrived, it was beautiful, exciting, and mysertious. There were a lot of wet and slimy flavors paired with a quinoa, so this could have gone either way, however, it proved itself phenomenal. We so very much enjoyed this dish, we could not stop ooing and ahhing over it like the parents of a child. Okay, weird, I know, but it was spectacular.

Some time into the sashimi plate came the tartare, not steak as we had thought, but lamb, it looked very intimidating with the baked onion crisps. My date who is the president of steak tartare was ready and waiting for this one. It was nice, mushy, alright. To me the meat was, again, bland. The crisps were more flavorful than the meat, and while I imagined my date would like this one the best, the conniseur of steak tartare did not enjoy this as much as others we have had before.

All in all, I would happily return to the mediterranean tapas abode of Timna, however, the things we ordered seemed very hit and miss. They were good, but nothing too bold. Although, I must say, the mediterranean sashimi still plays in my mind as a beautiful array of taste and texture. I would return for that alone... and possibly that bread. I'd say it's worth a data night, get the sashimi, and try something else because we struck out on the other two.
